Can ChatGPT or Claude edit videos?
Not from the chat window, according to the documentation we could read. Anthropic's help for Claude.ai (dated July 23, 2026) lists documents and images as accepted files, with no video and no audio. OpenAI's help center refused our automated reading, so we cannot state what ChatGPT accepts. Both assistants can write a script, a cut list or caption text. To get a finished MP4 you need a plugin or connector from an editing tool, a coding agent installed on your computer such as Claude Code, or a tool built for editing.
By Quentin, video editor, founder of Rushly AI. Rushly AI sells an editing tool, so I am not neutral: every fact below points to a publisher's page or a guide, read on October 29, 2026.
Three ways an assistant ends up editing a video
It depends on where the assistant runs.
| ChatGPT | Claude | |
|---|---|---|
| In the chat window | OpenAI's help center refused our automated reading, so we state no list of accepted files. Check it in the app. | Documents and images; no video or audio. 500 MB per file, 20 files per chat (Anthropic help, July 23, 2026). |
| With a plugin or connector | OpusClip says its AI Producer plugin runs inside Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app for Mac and Windows, not in the web or phone app. invideo says an MCP connection lets ChatGPT operate its editor. | Tella and OpusClip describe connectors for Claude. The editing happens in their tool, with their account and limits. |
| With a coding agent on your computer | Codex, listed as included in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, with usage limits. | Claude Code, in the terminal, an IDE, the desktop app or the browser, which can run programs such as ffmpeg. |
Plugin and connector claims come from the companies that sell the tools, so treat them as vendor statements.
What an assistant does well
According to the guides we read, ChatGPT and Claude help before and around the edit:
- Hooks, scripts, titles and descriptions, as text.
- A cut list from a transcript you paste. For example: "Here is my transcript with timestamps. Where I repeat a sentence, keep the last complete take and list the times to cut." You check every timecode before anything is cut.
- Caption text, from the same transcript.
- Writing and running code (ffmpeg, a transcription tool) when it runs on your own machine.
What the documentation says it does not do
- It does not watch the video the way you do. Tella's page says Claude sees video through stills and short previews, not continuous playback. OpusClip's Claude tutorial says the assistant works from transcripts, timestamps and metadata and cannot see the picture, so it will not notice a lighting change.
- The tool does the editing, not the chat. Tella's connector only edits videos that live in Tella; a local file has to be uploaded there first or handled by a separate skill. OpusClip lists what its Claude connector cannot do, such as building a timeline from imported assets.
- You still review. In Adobe's Creators' Toolkit Report 2026 (more than 16,000 creators, May 2026), 57% say their creative AI output usually needs moderate or extensive editing before it can be shared. That figure covers creative AI in general, not only video.
For the cuts themselves, see remove silences and remove filler words.
The developer route, with the costs
It exists, and some creators like it. One guide (published July 17, 2026, updated July 25) builds a pipeline around Claude Code. The author lists "Setup ~30 minutes", tested only on Windows 11, and asks for Claude Code, Python 3.10 or newer, Node 18 or newer and ffmpeg, with a transcription account (AssemblyAI) on top. Those figures are the author's own, from the author's machine.
What it costs, from the publishers' pages read on October 29, 2026:
- Claude: Pro is $17 a month with annual billing ($200 up front) or $20 monthly. Max starts at $100 a month. Claude Code is included in paid plans, not in the free plan.
- ChatGPT: Go is $8 a month and Plus is $20. Codex is listed as included from Free to Pro, with limits that depend on the model and the task. The page does not state the Free and Go limits.
- Transcription and other services: an account with a provider, sometimes paid. The guide notes that prices drift.
- Your time: setting up, then checking the result. We have no measured figure for that.
- Privacy: with a plugin, your video goes to that tool's service; with a transcription service, your audio goes to a third party.
Sora: generating is not editing
OpenAI announced on March 24, 2026 that it was ending Sora, its video generation app and API. Even when it ran, generating a clip was not the same job as editing the one you filmed.
When this route is for you
- You are comfortable in a terminal and enjoy tuning your own pipeline.
- You want a very specific look that ready-made tools do not give.
- You accept spending time on checks and fixes.
It suits you less if you want to post every day without installing anything.
The no-install alternative
Rushly AI starts from the other end: you upload a video of one person talking to the camera, pick a style, and get back an edit ready to post. Nothing to install, no API key. Your first video is free, with no credit card. Raw footage can run up to 7 minutes on Solo, 20 minutes on Creator and 1 hour on Pro (Rushly AI FAQ). Rushly AI adds no B-roll, music or sound effects, and it does not generate video. For the wider picture of tools, see AI video editor. To weigh a tool against a person, see what a video editor costs and how to replace a video editor.
When Rushly AI is not the right choice
- Your video has several voices, or nobody talks to the camera.
- You want music, B-roll or sound effects. Rushly AI does not add them.
- You want to cut a long video into many clips. That is a clipping tool's job; Rushly AI has Smart Clips for videos of 8 minutes and more, but it is not built around that.
- You want a script, a hook or captions as text only. An assistant does that well.

Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT edit a video file?
Not on its own. An OpusClip guide, last modified Oct 27, 2026, says ChatGPT can plan an edit and write scripts and captions but is not a video editor, and that editing needs a plugin. We could not read OpenAI's help center (access refused), so we do not state which files ChatGPT accepts: check it in the app.
Can Claude edit videos?
Not in the Claude.ai chat window: Anthropic's upload help, dated July 23, 2026, lists documents and images, with no video or audio. Claude can edit through a connector from an editing tool, or through Claude Code on your computer, where it runs programs such as ffmpeg.
Can I upload a video to ChatGPT or Claude?
Anthropic's help lists no video format for Claude.ai, with a limit of 500 MB per file and 20 files per chat. For ChatGPT, OpenAI's help center refused our automated reading, so we do not state its accepted files. We did not test an upload ourselves.
Is Claude Code free?
No. Anthropic's pricing page says Claude Code is included in all paid plans: Pro is $17 a month on annual billing or $20 billed monthly, and Max starts at $100 a month. Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, is listed as included in ChatGPT's Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, with usage limits that depend on the plan. Read Oct 29, 2026.
Does ChatGPT still make videos with Sora?
OpenAI announced on March 24, 2026 that it was ending the Sora app and API. Generating a clip is a different job from editing yours in any case.
Do I need to code to edit a video with Claude?
You do not write code, Claude does, but you install and run programs. One guide (updated July 25, 2026) lists Claude Code, Python 3.10 or newer, Node 18 or newer and ffmpeg, plus an account with a transcription service. A browser tool where you drop your video needs none of that.
