AI video editor: what it does to a video you filmed
An AI video editor is software that cuts, captions and reframes your footage for you, but the phrase covers four different kinds of tool: generators, clipping tools, general editors with AI features, and auto-editors that take one raw take and return an edit. For a vertical video where you talk to the camera, the last kind is the one to look at. Rushly AI is that kind: you upload the video, pick a style, and get back a 9:16 edit ready to review. It competes with the tools named below, and you can try it on one video for free.
By Quentin, video editor, founder of Rushly AI. Pages read on October 29, 2026.
How it works
- You upload your video: one person talking to the camera, as an MP4 or MOV file, filmed on a phone or a camera.
- You pick a style. The style sets how the captions look.
- You get back a 9:16 MP4 for TikTok, Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts. If you do not like the edit, run it again or try another style.
Rushly AI runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install. Your first video is free, with no credit card.
Four kinds of "AI video editor"
The query mixes tools that have little in common. Here is how to sort them.
| Kind | You bring | You get | Examples we read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generators | a prompt or an image | footage that was never filmed | Kapwing also lists video and B-roll made from a text prompt |
| Clipping | a long video | short clips | OpusClip's original product |
| General editors with AI tools | your footage | an edit you build tool by tool | VEED, Kapwing |
| Auto-editors for one speaker | a raw talking-head take | a finished edit | Captions (AI Edit), OpusClip (AI Producer), Rushly AI |
Rushly AI sits in the last row. It is not a generator and it does not do clipping. Canva also edits video, but its pages refused our automated reading on October 29, so we do not describe what it automates.
What a general editor leaves to you
VEED's Magic Cut and Kapwing's Smart Cut are good at one job: they cut silences and filler words. VEED's support article, dated August 25, 2026, says Magic Cut also removes mistakes, is available on all plans, supports English only, and asks you to preview and approve the cuts before you export. Kapwing's page lists word-by-word captions with colors, fonts and animations, and trimming by transcript.
Each of these is a separate tool that you run, check and combine. The Kapwing and VEED pages we read describe cuts, captions and transcript editing; we did not see zooms placed on key words described there. Our view as an editor: an auto-editor is different because one pass makes the rhythm decisions together, and your job becomes review, not assembly.
Stated limits of the auto-editors
| Tool | Limits stated on its own pages |
|---|---|
| Captions, AI Edit | 3 minutes or less, one person talking, video not already edited, vertical or horizontal |
| OpusClip, AI Producer | one person talking to the camera, 5 minutes, 1.99 GB, MP4, MOV or WebM, output up to 1080p at 30 fps; sound effects and music are in beta |
| VEED, Magic Cut | English only |
| Kapwing, free plan | exports up to 4 minutes, 720p, with a watermark; Pro costs $16 a month and lifts those limits |
| Rushly AI | one person talking to the camera, MP4 or MOV; raw footage up to 7 minutes on Solo, 20 on Creator, 1 hour on Pro (Rushly AI FAQ); 9:16 output |

What Rushly AI does, and what it does not
Rushly AI:
- cuts silences, filler words and failed or repeated takes (remove filler words, remove silences);
- places zooms from the text of what you say, and you can switch them off;
- adds word-by-word captions (animated captions, captions for TikTok and Reels);
- cleans your voice, brings the sound to a standard level (-14 LUFS) and exports an MP4 in 1080 by 1920, with the captions in one of its 14 caption styles drawn into the picture.
Rushly AI adds no B-roll, no music and no sound effects. It does not generate video or avatars, and it does not make horizontal videos. It edits in French, English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Where AI editing still needs you
- The review is yours. In Adobe's Creators' Toolkit Report 2026 (more than 16,000 creators, fielded in May 2026), 57% say their creative AI output usually needs moderate or extensive editing before it is ready to share. That figure covers creative AI in general, not only video.
- Captions depend on your audio. YouTube warns that automatic captions can misread mispronunciations, accents, dialects and background noise. A clear voice helps, and names, prices and brand words still need a check.
- A chat assistant is not an editor. Whether ChatGPT or Claude can cut your video has its own answer: can ChatGPT edit videos.
How to choose
- A long recording that should become short clips: a clipping tool.
- A prompt and no footage: a generator.
- You want to steer every cut: a general editor such as VEED or Kapwing (see Rushly AI as an alternative to Descript, VEED and Kapwing).
- A talking-head video you already filmed, and you would rather review than assemble: an auto-editor, Rushly AI included.
- You are weighing it against a person: what a video editor costs and hiring an editor or using a tool.
When Rushly AI is not the right choice
- You want to generate a video from a text prompt or an image.
- You want to cut a long video into many clips. That is the job of a clipping tool. Rushly AI has Smart Clips for videos of 8 minutes and more, which pick the strongest moments, but it is not built around that.
- Your video has several speakers, or nobody talks to the camera.
- You need B-roll, music or sound effects. Rushly AI does not add them.
- You are making a brand film or an ad. A human editor is the better fit.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AI video editor?
Software that does part of the editing for you: cutting silences and mistakes, adding captions, reframing to vertical, placing zooms. The label also covers tools that generate video from a text prompt and tools that cut a long video into clips, so check which one a page is selling before you sign up.
What is the difference between an AI video editor and an AI video generator?
An editor starts from footage you filmed and changes it. A generator starts from a prompt or an image and produces footage that was never filmed. Rushly AI is an editor: it does not generate videos or avatars.
Is there a free AI video editor?
Several tools have a free plan with limits. Kapwing's free plan, read on Oct 29, 2026, exports videos of up to 4 minutes at 720p with a watermark, and VEED says the Magic Cut tool is available on all plans. Limits change, so read the pricing page the day you decide. Rushly AI gives you the first video free, with no credit card; the free video carries a watermark that paid plans remove.
Can an AI video editor replace a human editor?
For a short video where you talk to the camera, a tool can produce a first edit and you review it. It does not film, choose the subject or direct a brand film. Our page on hiring an editor or using a tool compares the two.
Which videos can Rushly AI edit?
Videos where one person talks to the camera, uploaded as MP4 or MOV, returned in vertical 9:16 for TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. According to the Rushly AI FAQ, raw footage can run up to 7 minutes on Solo, 20 minutes on Creator and 1 hour on Pro. It does not generate video and does not add B-roll, music or sound effects.
