How to remove silence from a video without wrecking the rhythm
To remove silence from a video, upload it to a tool that measures volume or reads the transcript, and let it cut the pauses. The setting matters more than the tool: Tella's page lists 800 ms, 500 ms and 300 ms modes, while Clipchamp only flags pauses over 3 seconds. A silence remover will not take out “ums”. Rushly AI cuts dead air in the same pass as ums and failed takes; this page does not state a pause length for it, so watch the result.

3 steps
- Upload the video. One take, you talking to the camera.
- Choose how short the pauses should be, if the tool lets you. Rushly AI cuts dead air as part of its rough cut.
- Watch the result and fix what you disagree with.
Rushly AI gives you the first video free, with no credit card. If you want something free for every video, the table below lists options and their limits.
Which pauses to keep
A silence is not always a flaw. Cut:
- the start and end of the take, when you settle in or reach for the stop button;
- dead air, when you search for a word.
Keep, in a calm style:
- the beat before a number or a punchline, which makes the viewer wait for the word;
- the moment after a question, which lets the viewer answer in their head;
- short breaths between sentences.
In a fast style, the breaths go too. Every cut is a jump cut, and a jump cut on every pause is a choice that works in a 20-second clip and wears you out in three minutes.
An example of the arithmetic, not a measurement: a 60-second take with ten pauses of 0.8 seconds loses 8 seconds if you cut them all, about 13% of the clip. A higher threshold cuts fewer pauses and saves less. Test on 30 seconds, watch, then adjust.
Silence and ums are not the same thing
A volume-based cutter does not remove an “um”: it is spoken out loud. Microsoft's page on Clipchamp's silence removal covers pauses and does not mention filler words. Submagic's Auto-Cut page talks about silence only. Tools that remove fillers read the transcript: see how to remove filler words from a video.
The tools side by side
“Silence” does not mean the same thing in every tool.
| Tool | How it finds a pause | Setting | Limit, according to its page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clipchamp | Pauses over 3 seconds, after transcription | Not stated whether it can be changed | Free for all users; leaves a small pause |
| Tella | Pauses over 800 ms (natural), 500 ms (fast) or 300 ms (faster) | Three modes | Plan requirement not stated for the editor; page undated |
| Descript | Shorten word gaps in the AI Tools panel | Pause length (“more than” or “between”) and a target length | Uses AI credits; free plan lists 1 media hour |
| Pictory | Remove silences toggle | Duration from 1 to 99 seconds | Only for projects started with “Edit videos using text”; page dated June 26, 2025 |
| Submagic | Auto-Cut on the Captions page | None described | Plan requirement not stated on the feature page; its pricing page lists silence removal in a contradictory way for Starter and as included on Pro and Business |
| Opus Clip | AI Enhance, Remove Pauses | None documented | 60 free credits a month; watermark not mentioned |
| CapCut (desktop) | Remove filler words menu includes a “pauses” option | None described | Page of May 16, 2025 says it needs Pro, with a free Pro trial |
| Rushly AI | As part of its rough cut, with the transcript and the sound | None described on this page | First video free, with a watermark; plans are on the home page |

Quick settings guide
- Over 3 seconds (Clipchamp's setting): you only remove real dead air. The video keeps its breathing.
- About 800 ms (Tella's natural mode): a tutorial or an explainer pace.
- About 500 ms (Tella's fast mode): social clips.
- About 300 ms (Tella's faster mode): a jump-cut style that the page itself says can feel breathless.
These are the vendors' own defaults, not a standard. Your voice, your speed and your platform change what feels right.
When Rushly AI is not the right choice
- Audio only. For a podcast or music, Descript or an audio editor fits better.
- You only want long gaps trimmed. Clipchamp's free silence removal does that for pauses over 3 seconds.
- You only want the pauses cut and nothing else. Rushly AI edits the whole video into 9:16; a simple cutting tool is enough.
- Your video has several voices, or nobody talks to the camera. Rushly AI targets one person talking to the camera.
- You need music, sound effects or B-roll. Rushly AI does not add any.

Frequently asked questions
How do I remove silence from a video automatically?
Upload the video to a tool that finds the pauses, either by measuring volume or by reading the transcript, and let it cut them. Then set the pause length: cut too short and the video turns into a machine gun, too long and it drags. Always watch the result, because a pause is sometimes meaningful.
How long should a silence be before it is cut?
It depends on the tool and the feel you want. Tella's page lists three modes: pauses over 800 ms for a natural pace, over 500 ms for social clips, over 300 ms for a breathless jump-cut style. Clipchamp only flags pauses over 3 seconds. Descript lets you set the pause length and a target length, such as 200 ms.
Does removing silence also remove ums and uhs?
Not by itself. An “um” is a sound, so a volume-based cutter keeps it. Tools that remove fillers read the transcript. Microsoft's page on Clipchamp's silence removal does not mention filler words, and Submagic's Auto-Cut page talks about silence only.
Is there a free way to remove silence from a video?
Yes, with limits. Microsoft's page says Clipchamp's silence removal is free for all users, but it only flags pauses over 3 seconds. Descript's free plan lists 1 media hour. Opus Clip lists 60 free credits a month and Gling 1 AI-edited hour a month, with a watermark on free MP4 exports. Tella's page also mentions ffmpeg's silencedetect filter, which only lists silent ranges: you need a script to cut them.
Which pauses should I keep?
The ones that serve the message: the beat before a number or a punchline, and the moment after a question. Cut the dead air at the start and end of the take and the time you spend searching for a word. In a fast style, even short breaths can go.
Why does my video feel choppy after I remove silence?
Because every cut is a jump cut. Remove pauses over 300 ms and the pace becomes breathless, which can work for a short clip and tires you over three minutes. Raise the threshold, keep a small gap, and test on the first 30 seconds before you process the whole video.
