Captions app alternative for talking-head videos
Choose Captions if you edit on your phone, want avatars, generated B-roll, music or eye-contact correction, or edit by chat. Choose Rushly AI if you have a raw talking-head take, up to 7 minutes on the Solo plan, and want it edited in the browser in one pass into a 9:16 MP4. Rushly AI is a competitor of Captions. Captions also sells AI Edit for a single speaker, so the two overlap on that one job.

Captions in brief
Captions (captions.ai) is also called Mirage; its old help site redirects there.
| What we read | |
|---|---|
| What it is | An AI video editor on web, iPhone and Android: AI Edit (style, cuts, B-roll, custom zooms, music, transitions), styled captions, translation, pause and filler removal, noise reduction, eye-contact correction, AI avatars, text editing, music and sound effects (captions.ai home page). |
| Plans shown | Max $24.99 a month, 500 credits; Frontier $69.99 a month, 1,400 credits; Frontier 2x $139.99 (2,800); Frontier 4x $279.99 (5,600); Enterprise on quote. The page says it reflects iOS plans only (pricing page). |
| Older plans | The help center still lists Basic at $9.99 (200 credits a month) and an Android-only Lite at $4.99. Neither is on the pricing page we read. |
| Free | A free plan with fewer features: trimming, transitions, some media, one caption template. Credits: none on the pricing page; 60 to 200 once in the help center. |
| Credits | AI Edit costs 10 to 40 credits depending on duration, model and algorithm; a generated video, 16 credits per 6 seconds; a chat edit, 2 credits per message; audio reduction, 2 credits a minute. The help page lists no unlimited AI feature. |
| Rollover | On Basic and above, the balance can reach 3 times the monthly allowance; if you downgrade, the excess is lost right away. |
| Watermark | The help center says a Basic export using a Max-only feature gets a watermark. For the free plan: not found. |
| Limits | AI Edit: one speaker, 3 minutes. The pricing page shows iOS prices only. AI features are paid in credits. |

Captions does not give a language list for AI Edit. For adding captions, it does not state the export resolution. We did not test its edits.
When Captions is the right choice
- You edit on a phone. Captions has iPhone and Android apps today. Rushly AI runs in the browser, with a mobile version planned.
- You want more than an edit. Captions lists AI avatars, a digital twin, video generation, generated B-roll, music, sound effects and eye-contact correction. Rushly AI does none of them.
- You want to translate or dub. Captions lists translation in 100+ languages.
- You like editing by chat or by text. Captions lists both.
When Rushly AI is the right choice
- Your footage is longer than 3 minutes. AI Edit stops at 3 minutes. Rushly AI takes raw footage up to 7 minutes on Solo.
- You work from a laptop and prefer to upload a file, pick a style and review the result.
- You want to see the cost before you start. In Rushly AI a video uses credits in proportion to the length of your footage, and the cost is shown before you launch the edit. A video that fails costs nothing.
- You want failed takes and a standard sound level handled for you. Rushly AI cuts failed and repeated takes, cleans the voice and brings the exported sound to -14 LUFS.
Rushly AI's limits: browser only for now, no B-roll, music or sound effects, 1080×1920 MP4 only, and it is built for a raw take of one person, not as an editor with a timeline.

Frequently asked questions
How much does the Captions app cost?
Captions' pricing page, read on November 3, 2026, lists Max at $24.99 a month (500 credits) and Frontier at $69.99 a month (1,400 credits), plus bigger Frontier tiers at $139.99 and $279.99 and Enterprise on quote. The page says its features and prices reflect iOS plans only. Prices can vary by region and are shown before you confirm.
Is the Captions app free?
Yes, there is a free plan with a more limited feature set: trimming, transitions, some media and one caption template. The pricing page shows no AI credits on it, while the help center says 60 to 200 credits once. We did not find a clear watermark rule for the free plan, so we do not state one.
What are the limits of Captions' AI Edit?
According to Captions' help page, AI Edit takes one person talking, up to 3 minutes, vertical 9:16 or horizontal 16:9, in footage that has not been edited yet. You choose the language for each project, and the page does not list the languages. It uses credits, from 10 to 40 per edit depending on duration, model and algorithm.
How long can a video be in Captions?
It depends on the feature and the device. For adding captions, the help page gives 4 to 60 seconds on the web, 10 minutes on iPhone and desktop, 5 minutes on Android, and 5 minutes for translation and dubbing. For AI Edit, 3 minutes. Rushly AI accepts raw footage up to 7 minutes on Solo, 20 on Creator and 1 hour on Pro.
Does Captions have a yearly plan and can I get a refund?
The pricing FAQ says a yearly plan bills 12 months in advance at a reduced rate, without listing yearly prices. Captions' help says monthly plans are non-refundable and that you can cancel at any time to avoid future charges. We found nothing about refunds for yearly plans, so we do not claim either way. Purchases through Apple or Google are refunded by Apple or Google.
How do I cancel Captions?
If you bought on the website, you cancel on Captions' Stripe billing page: enter your purchase email, open the link you receive, and choose Cancel Plan. If you bought in the App Store, cancel in your Apple subscription settings. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal; deleting the app or your account does not cancel. Our full table is in the page on cancelling an AI video editor subscription.
