Bad audio take? Fix it in Premiere Pro.

Mic too far away, a room that rings, wind, clipping. A 30-second diagnosis, what Premiere already does, and Rushly's AI cleanup, without leaving your timeline.

The short answer

To fix a bad audio take in Premiere Pro, first name the problem (background noise, echo, muffled voice or clipping), then try Enhance Speech and the Essential Sound panel (Reduce Noise, Reduce Reverb). If that's not enough, Rushly cleans the voice with AI right in your sequence (10 credits per minute of voice), then brings it back to the right level, with no export and no import. A clipped or badly damaged voice can only be partly fixed: always listen to the result on headphones.

In short
  • Start by naming the problem: constant noise, echo, muffled voice, changing noise (street, wind) or clipping. Each one has its own fix.
  • Premiere already does a lot at no extra cost: Enhance Speech, Reduce Noise, Reduce Reverb. Raise the sliders gently.
  • When the noise changes (street, wind, distant voices), Rushly isolates the voice with AI and brings it back to a clean level, across the whole sequence, with no export.
  • Nothing saves everything: a clipped or inaudible voice stays damaged. The Free plan (300 credits) lets you test on your own take, for about 28 minutes of voice cleaned and mixed.

Hear the difference

Outdoor take with wind

Before: the damaged take
After: voice cleaned by the AI

Room with an echo

Before: the damaged take
After: voice cleaned by the AI

Street with a voice in the background

Before: the damaged take
After: voice cleaned by the AI

Same take, before then after, excerpts as they are, with no reprocessing at all. Test takes: wind added, an echoing room, a street with a voice in the background. The after is the voice cleaned by Rushly's engine, before the mix. Every damaged take gives a different result: try yours on the Free plan before you commit.

The 30-second diagnosis

Listen for 20 seconds on headphones and find the line that sounds like your take. The right fix depends on the problem, not on the trendy tool.

Constant background noise (ventilation, air conditioning, mic hiss): the easiest case. Reduce Noise does the job, and Reduce Rumble helps with a low hum.

Echo, a room that rings: Reduce Reverb, in the Essential Sound panel. Raise it gently. Too much, and the voice turns hollow.

A muffled or distant voice: Enhance Speech brings back presence. If the mic was far away, you get clarity back, not closeness.

Noise that changes (street, wind, people walking by): classic reducers struggle, because they learn a steady noise. This is where isolating the voice with AI helps most.

Clipping (the sound “cracks”, the peaks are flattened): the hardest case. A flattened peak has lost information. You can soften the result, not rebuild it. If you can redo the take, redo it.

The Premiere basics, in five minutes

Select the clip, open the Essential Sound panel (Window, Essential Sound) and click Dialogue. Click Enhance to run Enhance Speech: the task runs in the background, and the Mix Amount slider balances your original voice and the enhanced version. Adobe describes the feature in its online help.

In the Repair section, add Reduce Noise, Reduce Rumble, hum (DeHum) and reverb (Reduce Reverb) as needed. A slider pushed all the way gives a metallic voice: go up in small steps, listening as you go.

If Enhance Speech stays stuck at 0% while downloading, if the effect isn't applied on export, or if you hear no change, you're not alone: these are cases reported by users on Adobe's forum. For the download, the accepted answer in that thread suggests quitting Premiere, then cancelling and restarting the component download from the Creative Cloud app.

When that's not enough: Rushly's AI cleanup

The Audio tab in Rushly isolates your voice with AI and separates it from noise, echo and background sounds, right on your sequence. The result lands on a new track, your original track stays untouched, and you can compare in one click with “Original sound | With Rushly”.

Rushly then mixes the voice: a chain of native Adobe effects (DeNoise, EQ, compressor, DeEsser, limiter) and a level set to your target: Social (-14 LUFS), Podcast (-16 LUFS) or Loud (-12 LUFS), with a true peak under -1 dBTP. With several voices, each track is measured and mixed separately.

It all happens in Premiere: no export, no website to open, no file to re-import. Only the voice to clean is sent, through Rushly's servers, to a voice isolation engine (ElevenLabs Voice Isolator). The video stays on your machine.

AI cleanup costs 10 credits per minute of voice, the mix 1 credit per 2 minutes: about 105 credits for 10 minutes of voice cleaned and mixed. The cost shows before you start, and your credits are refunded if the cleanup fails. The Free plan gives you 300 credits once, no credit card, which is about 28 minutes of voice.

What AI can't fix

No miracles, and it's better to know that before promising your client perfect sound. A clipped voice stays damaged: AI can soften the flaw, not rebuild the lost peaks. A voice you can't hear (a whisper, a mic at the other end of the room) stays hard to understand. Several people talking at once, or loud music under the voice, give uncertain results with any tool.

AI isolation can also smooth out the tone of a voice or leave a metallic trace. Listen on headphones, across the whole take, before you approve. Rushly only compares with your ear: no score, no percentage.

So it doesn't happen again

Move the mic closer to the mouth: it's the best “treatment” there is. Record ten seconds of room silence at the start (it helps set the noise reduction), keep the gain low enough that peaks stay under about -6 dB, and switch off the ventilation and the fridge if you can. And do a ten-second test before the interview starts, not after.

What people ask us.

How do I fix a bad audio take in Premiere Pro?
Name the problem (constant noise, echo, muffled voice, changing noise, clipping), then try Enhance Speech and the Essential Sound panel. If that's not enough, Rushly's AI cleanup isolates the voice right in your sequence and brings it back to the right level. A clipped voice can only be partly fixed.
How do I remove echo and background noise in Premiere Pro?
Open the Essential Sound panel, click Dialogue, then gently raise Reduce Noise and Reduce Reverb in the Repair section. For noise that changes (street, wind), AI cleanup like Rushly's works better than a fixed setting.
Enhance Speech isn't working in Premiere: what can I do?
The problems users report are a download stuck at 0%, an effect missing on export, or no audible change. For the download, an accepted answer on Adobe's forum suggests restarting the component from Creative Cloud. If the result is still not good enough, Rushly's AI cleanup does the same job in your sequence.
How much does Rushly's voice cleanup cost?
10 credits per minute of voice for the AI cleanup, and 1 credit per 2 minutes for the mix, so about 105 credits for 10 minutes. The Free plan gives you 300 credits once, no credit card. Plans are on the pricing page.
Can AI fix a clipped or inaudible voice?
Not completely. A flattened peak has lost information, and a voice you can't hear stays hard to understand. AI softens the flaw, it doesn't rebuild what's missing. Test on your take before promising a client a result.
Do my files get sent to a server?
Only the voice to clean is sent, through Rushly's servers, to a voice isolation engine. The video stays on your machine. Your original track is never changed: the result lands on a new track.

Bad take? Test it on yours.

300 credits included, no credit card: enough to clean about 28 minutes of voice in Premiere Pro.
