The short answer

A jump cut in Premiere Pro removes a piece of a continuous take so the video jumps straight to what comes next: you add two edits (Cmd/Ctrl + K), delete the gap with Ripple Delete (Shift + Delete) and the timeline closes up. The edit lives or dies on rhythm: an alternating punch-in, a cutaway or a J-cut makes the jump feel natural. A plugin like Rushly automates the tedious part, finding the cuts in talking footage, and its Zooms tab can place the punch-ins. The polish is still yours.

In short
  • Two edits and a Ripple Delete: a jump cut comes down to three moves.
  • A good jump cut is about rhythm and how you hide it, not the cut itself.
  • Alternating punch-in, B-roll or J-cut: three ways to make the jump feel natural.
  • Rushly finds the cuts in talking footage and builds a sequence. Its Zooms tab can add the punch-ins.

What is a jump cut?

A jump cut is a cut inside the same take: the subject stays in the same shot, but the video jumps from one moment to another. In a talking-head video, it removes the dead air, the hesitations and the botched sentences so the pace stays tight.

The jump cut has become the default style of short-form content. Everyone is used to it. Done badly, it feels choppy. Done well, you barely notice it.

How to do a jump cut in Premiere Pro, step by step

1. Find the part to remove. Play with J, K, L and stop just before the hesitation or the pause.

2. Add two edits. Cmd/Ctrl + K at the start, then at the end of the part. To cut every track at once, use Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + K.

3. Delete and close the gap. Select the piece and press Shift + Delete (Ripple Delete). If you used Delete on its own, right-click the gap and choose Ripple Delete.

4. Adjust the handles. Keep a few frames before the first word and after the last one. A cut tight against the voice makes the rhythm feel chopped.

Three ways to hide the cut

The alternating punch-in. In Effect Controls, set one clip's Scale a bit above 100% (around ten percent more is enough), then alternate: one clip at 100%, the next slightly scaled up. The change of framing justifies the cut for the viewer.

The cutaway. B-roll placed over the edit hides the jump, and it also illustrates what you are saying.

The J-cut or L-cut. Offset the audio edit from the picture edit: the next shot's sound starts before its picture (J-cut), or the previous shot's sound carries on under the new picture (L-cut). The ear moves on before the eye does, so the cut lands softer.

On the audio side, a crossfade of a few frames on the edit gets rid of the small click.

Automate jump cuts with Rushly

Rushly handles finding the cuts: it transcribes your clip, removes silences, hesitations, false starts and retakes, and builds a new sequence made of jump cuts, named after your clip. Before it builds it, you go through every cut in the review panel and keep or cut each one with a click. Your original clip is not touched.

Edits land on whole frames of your sequence: no one-frame gaps and no extra frames between two shots. And if your edit uses J-cuts or L-cuts, picture and sound stay the way you edited them through the overlap.

Rushly's Zooms tab then helps hide the cuts: it places zooms on the strong words of your voice, the classic trick to mask a jump. They are Premiere effect layers on their own tracks, your clips stay untouched, and one click removes them. They are placed by rules on the transcript (numbers, superlatives, lists, contrasts), not by an AI looking at the picture. Details in the guide to automatic zooms in Premiere Pro. Rushly adds no B-roll: choosing cutaways is still your job as an editor, and it's where your style shows.

How fast should you cut?

There is no single rule: a tutorial can take a calmer pace than a Reel. Cut to hold attention, not to set a speed record. If you cut everything, you lose the breaths that make a voice sound natural. That's why Rushly offers three settings (Gentle, Normal, Aggressive): try them on the same clip and keep the one that sounds right.

A clean jump cut in five moves

  1. 1
    Find the part

Play with J, K, L and stop just before the hesitation or pause you want to remove.

  2. 2
    Add two edits

Cmd/Ctrl + K at the start, then at the end of the part. Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + K cuts every track at once.

  3. 3
    Delete and close the gap

Select the piece, then Shift + Delete (Ripple Delete) to pull the rest of the timeline up.

  4. 4
    Hide the cut

Alternate a slight punch-in (Scale around 110%), or place a cutaway over the edit.

  5. 5
    Smooth the audio

Add a short audio crossfade on the edit, or offset the audio edit to make a J-cut or an L-cut.

What people ask us.

How do you do a jump cut in Premiere Pro?
Add an edit at the start and one at the end of the part to remove (Cmd/Ctrl + K), select the gap and delete it with Ripple Delete (Shift + Delete) to close it up.
How do you make a jump cut less noticeable?
Alternate a slight punch-in between two shots, place a cutaway over the edit, or offset the audio (J-cut or L-cut). A short audio crossfade removes the click.
Is there an automatic jump cut in Premiere Pro?
Premiere can remove pauses from its Text panel, but it doesn't build a full edit. A plugin like Rushly suggests the cuts (silences, hesitations, retakes) in talking footage and builds a sequence.
Does Rushly add zooms automatically?
Yes. Its Zooms tab places zooms on the strong words of your voice, as Premiere effect layers you can remove in one click. It adds no B-roll.
Does a jump cut hurt the audio?
It can click if the edit lands on the voice. Keep a small handle around the words and add an audio crossfade of a few frames.
Does Rushly change my original clip?
No. It builds a new sequence in your project, and your clip stays as it is.
