Transcription in Premiere Pro.

How to transcribe a video in Premiere Pro, what makes a transcript accurate, and what it can do for your edit.

The short answer

To transcribe a video in Premiere Pro, open the Text panel, go to the Transcript tab, click Transcribe and choose the spoken language: the text appears, synced to the timeline, and you can correct it. Accuracy depends mostly on the quality of your audio. Rushly transcribes too, for a different reason: the transcript drives its rough cut. The engine is ElevenLabs Scribe v2, which timestamps every word, so cuts can land between two words.

In short
  • Native: Window > Text, Transcript tab, Transcribe. Adobe says it supports close to twenty languages.
  • Quality depends on the audio first: mic close to the speaker, little noise, one person talking at a time.
  • Proper nouns, brand names, jargon and numbers are the parts to check.
  • Rushly transcribes word by word to work out its cuts, with a cleaned-up text (no “um” or “uh”).

Transcribe natively in Premiere Pro

Premiere Pro has automatic transcription built into the Text panel. Select your sequence or clip, open Window > Text, go to the Transcript tab, click Transcribe and choose the spoken language. The text shows up word by word, linked to the timeline: click a word and the playhead jumps to it.

Adobe says it supports close to twenty languages for this transcription. You can then correct the text, search for a word, and even edit the video from the text. It's free and built in.

What makes a good transcript

Audio comes first. A mic close to the speaker, a room without echo, no music under the voice: that's the biggest accuracy factor, well ahead of which tool you pick.

One person at a time. Two voices talking over each other are hard for every engine.

The parts to check. Mostly proper nouns, brand names, industry jargon and numbers. Check those passages, not the whole text.

The most reliable test: transcribe two minutes of your own footage, count the errors, and compare tools on that same clip.

What you can do with a transcript

A transcript is for more than reading. It lets you search for a line across a whole clip, spot retakes (see the retakes guide), cut from the text, and give an editing engine the start and end of every word.

For captions, the transcript is only the starting point: line breaks, timing and styling matter just as much. See the auto captions guide.

How Rushly transcribes

In Rushly, transcription is a means, not the product. AI Cleanup transcribes your clip with ElevenLabs Scribe v2, which timestamps every word. Only the audio track is sent for this step: your video stays on your machine.

Those word-level timings are used to place cuts between two words and to find the pauses. The text itself is read sentence by sentence to remove filler, false starts and retakes. You see the text of each segment in the review panel, where you choose to keep or cut it. Rushly was built and tuned on French speech first. It also understands English, Spanish and Portuguese: test it on your own footage with the Free plan before you commit.

Two limits to know. The AI Cleanup transcript is cleaned up: it leaves out the “um” and “uh”, so it is not a true verbatim. And the review panel lets you keep or cut a segment, not rewrite the words.

Native or plugin: which one?

If you want to read, search and correct a text inside Premiere, the Text panel is enough, and it's free. If your goal is to save time on the rough cut of talking footage, a plugin built on the transcript, like Rushly, does the spotting for you.

Either way, the transcript isn't perfect: it suggests, you check. Compare tools on your own audio, not on an accuracy percentage.
